In traditional Chinese medicine, the concept of Yin and Yang is central to the understanding of health and disease. It is believed that the human body is a microcosm of the universe, and that health is maintained when the balance between Yin and Yang is maintained. In acupuncture, the Yin and Yang of the body are represented by the flow of Qi, or vital energy, through pathways called meridians. Imbalances in the flow of Qi can lead to pain, illness, and disease, and the goal of acupuncture is to restore balance by manipulating the flow of Qi. Acupuncture points are selected based on their specific Yin or Yang qualities and are stimulated with fine needles to promote the smooth flow of Qi, restoring balance and promoting health. The harmonious balance between Yin and Yang is seen as the cornerstone of good health and wellness in traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture.
